Maternal Instinct

When I was growing up, I was pure tomboy. I owned dolls but rarely played with them, I owned dresses but it was a chore to wear them, I despised tea parties, and I didn't play dress up. I was most comfortable in running shorts and a tee shirt accompanied but a baseball glove and cleats. I exceled at sports and I was up for any kind of "game." While I was a young kid I never dreamed about a lavish wedding and/or raising a family complete with a white picket fence. That's just not how I envisioned my life.

While I'm a married adult with a house, mortgage, dog, and all the responsibilities that go with it. Most folks would think that the kids come next in the equation. It's funny, I don't believe I will have kids. Bill and I have had numerous discussions about this topic. The end result is me saying that I'm too selfish and I lack the maternal instinct that my friends with kids happen to be graced with. I think people are born with that maternal and paternal instinct that goes with child rearing. I'm sure it can be a learned trait as well but you either have it or you don't.

It's funny as I sit here writing this in the Orlando International Airport sipping my starbucks there are kids chaotically running around being yelled at by their parents. Some are choosing to obey their folks and others are treating it as free for all. Yep, this definitely makes me think that kids are not for me. I like being responsible for me and Bill. Trust me, I have my hands full with Bill as it is!!! Although, I feel as though I am decent and safe with kids, I think I know what's best for them and would keep alive in my company then politely return them to my friends and/or their rightful owners.

In a way, I feel sorry for my parents that they won't have grand kids from me and Bill. I think they understand though, and they will have grand dogs! I'm honestly hoping that my sister with have quite the brood. She wants something like 5 kids, can you imagine? I will be an awesome aunt and they will be fun to be around.

So to my parents and all the folks that choose to be parents, my hat is definitely off to you. God Bless You!!!
